BEGINNER TRACK

Instructed by Eric Enberg and Mariann Smith

Let’s Begin!
MARIANN SMITH

This class is designed for those with no experience playing guitar. The parts of the instrument and string arrangement will be presented to assist class instruction. Basic tuning concepts and the use of digital tuners will be discussed. Two chords, the I and the V, will be introduced. The down and up strum will be covered. Picking technique, both with and without a pick, will be demonstrated and practiced with one and two chords. These techniques will be applied to a couple of simple songs. – LEVEL 1

 


 

Let's Jam!
ERIC ENBERG AND MARIANN SMITH

This class involves practicing and applying skills learned in the previous classes and reviewing one or two of the simple songs for an afternoon jam session. One or two additional techniques of interest will be covered. – LEVEL 1

 

 

Let’s Keep Strumming!
ERIC ENBERG

This class is designed for those with little or no experience playing guitar. Concepts learned in class 1 will be reviewed. Intermediate strums will be taught. The IV chord will be taught to greatly expand the number of songs accessible to the student. Single note playing and finger control will be explained and practiced. Tablature reading will be explained. Simple hammer-on technique will be introduced. – LEVEL 1

Flatpicking Guitar:
Introduction to Flatpicking

KATHY BARWICK

In this session, we’ll look at the basics of flatpicking guitar, including how to hold the pick, the basic down-up flatpicking stroke, and some basic rhythm strategies to get you started. ​ – LEVEL 1

 


 

Flatpicking Guitar:
A Melody-Based Approach to Understanding the Guitar Neck

KATHY BARWICK

We’ll look at some or all of the CAGED system’s positions on the guitar neck, using each to first find the associated major scale, and then express the same simple melody in each position. – LEVEL 2-3

 

 


 

Songwriting: Prosody & Digging Deep
HANNAH JANE KILE

Hannah Jane Kile will instruct on the importance of prosody in songwriting using demonstrations of famous tunes & selections from her catalog of over 4 self composed albums. She will also discuss the significance of digging deep in originality for creating the greatest emotional impact in successful lyric writing. – LEVEL 1-2

Basic Accompaniment Techniques
JOHN MASSEY

There are some basic techniques that can elevate one’s enjoyment of accompanying one’s own singing. Though there are many ways to accompany one’s self we will be focusing on
“strumming” techniques, strategies and rhythms. To get the most out of this workshop you need to know and be able to use basic major, minor, and seventh chords. – LEVEL 1-2

 


 

Acoustic Blues Workshop
BILLY RANEY

This event will feature some blues essentials, including:  12-bar blues, I-IV-V chord structure, Basic boogie-woogie patterns and some harmony shuffles, turn-arounds, and soloing using chord-based riffs. – LEVEL 2

 


 

Expressive Guitar Playing
DANIEL ROEST

This workshop focuses on becoming more “musical” in your playing by using the many parameters of expressive playing – volume, speed, tone, vibrato, phrasing, balance, silence, bends and slides, vibrato, rubato, legato, register and more. By the end of the hour, you will have more tools in your box and know how to use them. – ALL LEVELS

 


 

Dynamic Duets
PRESTON MARX III, KEVIN PADDOCK & GARY BOWMAN

Get ready to ‘Rock ’n Roll’ as we walk-through several classic ‘guitar duets!’  The band will also share strategies for you to develop your own acoustic ‘lead’ styles. – LEVEL 2-3
